Restricting Wholesale Products to Wholesale Customers in Bigcommerce

As an eCommerce seller, it is advisable to follow diverse strategies to push the sales of your products to your different sets of customers. For instance, you can offer special discounts on your items to motivate wholesale buyers to buy more. When you own a BigCommerce store, it is an intelligent move to make these offers visible to only those who want to buy in bulk to cut the clutter.

Wholesale customers usually have access to products or bundles of products not available to retail customers, and they often have a discount on the products they buy. Both of these can be set up in Bigcommerce using the Customer Groups* feature.

Creating a Wholesale Category

  1. Go to Products, Product Categories, then click Create a Category.
  2. Name the category Wholesale or something equivalent which will make sense to your customers.
  3. Enter a description for the category (optional), but be sure to leave the Parent Category selection set to No Parent Category.
  4. Click Save and Exit.

Creating a Wholesale Customer Group

  1. Go to Customers , Customer Groups, then click Create a Customer Group.
  2. Name the customer group Wholesale.
  3. Uncheck Customers in this group can see products in all categories, then uncheck all categories except for the Wholesale category.
  4. Leave All new customers should be added to this group unchecked.
  5. Set any product-level, category-level, or storewide discounts for customers in each group. See Setting up Customer Groups for more information.
  6. Save your customer group.

Creating a Retail Customer Group

  1. Click Create a Customer Group.
  2. Name the group Retail.
  3. Uncheck Customers in this group can see products in all categories, then check all categories except for the Wholesale category. In order to select subcategories, you must click the + sign to the left of its parent category; selecting a parent category does not automatically select its subcategories.
  4. Leave All new customers should be added to this group selected.
  5. Save your customer group.

Customer Group for Guests

After creating your customer groups, you’ll want to be sure to set a customer group for guests. A guest is anyone browsing your store while not logged in to an account.

  1. Go to Customers › Customer Groups.
  2. From the Customer Group for Guests dropdown, select the Retail group, or whichever group you’d like non-wholesalers to be included in. A confirmation window will appear. Click Ok.

Assigning Customers to Groups

  1. Go to CustomersView Customers.
  2. Select a customer group from the Group drop down list.
  3. Save your changes.
